Officially a Wilderness First Responder ⛑️🤙🏼

Updated: 6 days ago

The program was intense and totally worthwhile. I really appreciated how National Outdoor Leadership School runs it—a mix of lectures and hands-on scenarios so you’re constantly applying what you learn. I'm walking away feeling more confident in my ability to think clearly and respond when things don’t go according to plan.

For those unfamiliar, Wilderness First Responder training is focused on responding to medical situations in remote settings, where help isn’t immediately available. It also covers CPR/AED and airway management (adult, child, and infant), epinephrine use, and leads to full Wilderness First Responder certification.

I completed the hybrid version of the program, which included close to 40 hours of online coursework followed by five long and intensive days of in-person training. The online portion builds the foundation, and the in-person time is mostly about applying it—hands-on scenarios, practicing skills, and making real-time decisions. We engaged in so many scenarios that by the end I felt like I could add “patient actor” to my resume. Everyone rotates roles, so you’re both responding and playing the patient over and over again. At this point, I can run through the patient assessment system in my sleep!

I learned how to assess both the situation and the patient, gather the information needed to provide care, and build a thoughtful treatment plan. A big part of it is also knowing if, when, and how to evacuate.

Snapped on our way out of a night scenario in Joshua Tree. This was the most realistic experience of the week and my favorite part of the entire program.

Honestly, this feels valuable for anyone who spends time outdoors. You never know what you might come across, and having even a basic framework for how to respond can make a huge difference. I’m really glad I did it—and it feels like an important and responsible step as I continue leading groups outdoors.

Hopefully I never have to use much of this, but I feel far more prepared if something doesn’t go according to plan.

If you’re interested in a personalized outdoor experience for your family or a group of your kids’ friends, this is something I offer 😉. I’ve led one-day hikes to multi-day trips and can build in different skill focuses along the way. It’s the best way to learn! 🥾
